May 9, 2007 - Have a laptop? Like dogs and cats? The Sims: Pet Stories, to be released this summer, offers those on the go a chance to engage in classic The Sims gameplay with a more story-driven focus. Divided into two stories, players can choose to follow Stephen, an ordinary cook whose life is mucked up by his cousin's cat Diva, or Alice, who enters her Dalmatian Sam into a local contest in hopes of netting the cash prize. Each story is broken up into 12 chapters that task players to achieve goals like tidying up the house, submitting entry credentials to the local dog show board, and other commonplace, Sims-like things.
This game caters more to laptops in that it has a build in battery meter that alerts you when the juice is low, an auto-pause feature when you close the laptop lid, and a windowed mode to let you take care of other things if you're busy. It's being billed as a more accessible version of The Sims because of its more linear, focused gameplay. That being said, Sims vets will still be happy to find a sandbox mode wherein you can create your own Sim character, pet, and house among other things. You'll find 70 basic breeds of dog and 30 of the feline variety to toy around with.
Unique items have been added into the game, most notably agility items such as tires, see-saws, hurdles and ramps on which you train your pets. Their success is largely determined by how well you're able to meet their needs. We were told these unique items are aimed to stay contained within this version of The Sims, meaning there won't be a way to export them for upload into a different version of the game.
Completing each chapter of the story modes nets you a special reward, like a dog bed for meeting the requirements of Alice's first challenge. After all twelve chapter goals are dealt with the game opens up into a sandbox mode. Should you fail to meet a goal's requirement, you'll still be free to tinker around with the game world. In addition the agility items, player will find a slew of other new things to use like new floors, furniture, and myriad other things. Those craving online Sims interaction should look elsewhere, however, as Pet Stories is strictly a single-player affair. It's a stand-alone game too, meaning it doesn't require any previous versions from The Sims' universe to play. It should be enough to satisfy your Sims Stories cravings at least until Castaway Stories releases in Winter 2008, moving the action to a deserted island.
