A young woman standing in a lift is Emmie. Actually Emily Neverborn. Ms. Neverborn is prosperous business-woman in LA, California. Raven pouring hair, deep azure eyes and crimson voluptuous lips it’s Emmie in a couple of words. She is coming back to her flat on the 26th floor of the glass castle in the center of the city from the tightened negotiations.
She entered her apartment being totally exhausted. Emmie clapped her hands to switch on the light in a living room. She has just moved in so the specious room was quite “out of furniture”. She liked her new flat with enormous windows from floor to ceiling.
She fell down on her beloved sofa to take her breath. Silence. Devastating silence I can say. She was lying and staring to the ceiling. She could even easily hear her heart-beat. Rather weird thing you know. The living room was fool of electric light and there was such kind of feeling as there was just a room and nothing else around but darkness and only obstacle for darkness was a window glass.
“Foolish, - she said to herself. – You’ve never been afraid of darkness and it’s not a good time to start.” Actually she was afraid of darkness but she never confessed in this even to herself.
She noticed a letter on a floor.
“Interesting” She moved her body to the letter and opened it. There was just sole piece of paper with a single word
BOO!
The light went out and the darkness entrapped Emmie. She could see nothing. She clapped her hands to turn on the light and darkness has filled up with echoes. The darkness applauded to her. A fear came over her. She tried to reach the wall to find a door to go out of the flat and see what had happened. But she couldn’t. There were no walls in the darkness. There was nothing but Ms.Neverborn and her fear face to face.
The darkness wasn’t silent at all. It was filled up with different noises. Footsteps from the back. She turned her head to the footsteps. Step. Another step. Silence. She tried to run but her legs didn’t obeyed. She felt down. Her hand found a lighter. She turned it on and saw a small light in a distance. Emmie stood up and started to move towards it. Step. Step. She ran to the light. The lighter went out and the light in a distance disappeared. But she was gripped by fear and couldn’t stop.
She hit the wall. There was a light there she remembered the direction clearly. Emily just needed to go through that wall. She tried to smash it but she couldn’t. She moved backwards and rushed to the wall to smash it with her buddy.
She saw lights, thousands of them. The nocturnal city was full of it.
The sun next morning exposed the glass castle without one window. The wind played in Ms.Nevwborn’s living room with a piece of paper. The policemen won’t find it the darkness never leaves evidences.
An ageing face was narrating from the TV screen about how he’d met the president himself and that his daughter could get dressed herself since she was 3 y.o. Fiddlesticks! He switched it off without even looking at it. The room stuck to the exquisite style was full of dim quivering light. The dusk was near. It was a pretty good time to enjoy serenity of the solitude. But not for Vincent.
He was sitting in the center of the room in front of the huge mirror from floor to the ceiling staring at his own reflection. Yes, he’d met the president, long-long ago. He was a respected scientist and he’d devoted his life to the problem of immortality. You can easily find minute description of his works in Science Magazine 1965. He’d burned himself in that field. He was blackmailed for committing experiments on the human beings. But he wanted to grant the humanity an untarnished beauty and eternal youth. The government’s treated his initiative and his carrier was broken.
The sun went out. Here it comes. It wasn’t a mere fancy of his own. The reflection was moving. The man in a mirror stood up and went to the professor.
-Poor, poor me sitting in front of the mirror trying to find hints of the past, - the reflection burst into laughter.
-It can’t be…
-Why not? Am I not real? I thought that it is an apparent thing that I’m standing in front of the looking glass and speaking to my reflection.
-It can’t be…YOU are my reflection!..
-All the same. You are 86. You live all by yourself. And I can swear an oath that you’ve not lived a life of indulgence and sensual pleasure. Your lips had never murmured the words of love. And the only withered flowers on your grave will be from the cemetery keeper passing by.
-No!
-Yes. You’re done up with infinite melancholy and you are loathsome of visage.
-But!..
-Shhhh! Keep silence! You were sitting here for dozens of years wanting to dispose of me, to dispose of yourself. You’ve deserted your family. And now you’re burdened by your past. You’re nobody! Had you ever wanted to console yourself?
Vincent through a book to the mirror and web of tiny lines appeared on its surface.
-Wise precaution, - the reflection burst into laughter again.
-Shut up! Shut up! SHUT UP!!!
-You wanted to dispose of me! – Reflection flipped his fingers and the blinds fell down, flipped again and the mirror blasted from the inside. Thousands of splinters rushed to the room. The body of Vincent was punctured millions times. The reflection moved to the TV screen with a hideous smile on the face.
-Why are you smiling? Can’t you see I’m bleeding!..
-You’ve been bleeding for ages and today you’re dying. Your blood pressure level is shrinking…
-But you’ll die too right after me?.. – He asked desperately.
-No. The reflections are able to live without a human but the human can’t live without reflection. And some of them sometimes can’t resist a temptation to destroy the other.,
- Come back!!! – An eerie cry’s broken the silence of the nocturnal cemetery. She was standing like a stone angel on the top of the vault raising her hands to the newborn moon. Her radiant white dress of the best Egyptian cotton was tearing by the insane violent wind. She cried and blood trickled from her verdant eyes. I’ll find you anywhere!!!
He was hiding. He felt like a fish out of water among this tombstones, crosses and uncanny sculptures. He knew he can’t hide forever. An uncanny silence’s surrounded him. He should lurk only till dawn. But it’s so hard. Have you ever tried to lurk in the cemetery when a monster is looking for you, for your blood and soul?
They used to be like a birds of feather block together but then she turned to be a monster, a vampire. How could she?.. How could not he see her deviant behavior?,,
He stuck like a sore thumb in this impenetrable jungle of death.
- I can see you! - She fell on the ground right in front of him.
- LEAVE ME BE!!!- He shouted with a crucifix in his trembling hand.
-You know I won’t. I’m a law into myself. I do what I want and I always get what I want. - She approached her hand to his face. Why can’t you accept me as I am?
- You ask me why? I’ll tell you! First of all it’s because of your monstrous lie and that church congregation!!! You are a MONSTER!!! - He’s made a step backwards and felt on the tombstone. She stooped her head to his.
- You must pay me a tribute! I’ve chosen you to grant you an immortal life and untarnished beauty!!! But NO “I’m mortal and I don’t want to live forever because I’m so stupid!” You can’t scrounge nothing but misery from your wicked life! - She kissed him and blood from her face flowed to his pale one.
- What a touching tale! Did I say that you are a good raconteur? You scaled branchless trees of lie deceiving me!
- But I know that somewhere deep-deep inside in the neglected corners of your mortal soul you want to live forever! So don’t say that I’m liar, let’s call it quits. – She stood up.
- Let me watch from a distance.
- No I want you to be with me.
- But I DON”T
- So it’s your choice.
She took up a dagger sparkling in the cold impartial moonlight. She thrust it into his pumping heart and lay down near by putting her head to his shoulder crying. So this multitude of sinister happenings is ending. Two creatures lying on the tombstone are dead. She killed him and she was killed by herself in the sparkling light of dawn.
