Немного информации от SimCity в Google+ (любой переводчик в помощь)
"Educating your Sims has lots of benefits besides making more money from higher-paying jobs. Educated Sims are less prone to lighting their houses on fire, they install solar panels on their houses to reduce the amount of electricity that they require, they also use less water as well. They are healthier (less likely to get sick), and they are less likely to resort to crime."

...I really love the ploppables and upgrades too. And you will be amazed at how many things have extra ploppable toys so that every time you plop that item you can make it a little different.
The University lets you research many things and the solar power upgrade is just one. There are also toys that go with the University which are required in order to be able to do the research. For the solar farm you also need to add the School of Science to your University. You will be able to build a whole city around education and the University. Then, those educated residents go out and work in other cities in the region which may have little to no education.
Also, many unlocks are shared with other cities in the region, so when one city unlocks the Department of Education, anyone else in the region can then start building a University too. Its all about sharing!
